ABOUT THE BOOK:
This book draws on the extensive, never-before published correspondence of young Caulfield Grammarian, 2nd Lt Lyle Buntine, MC. The book recounts his school days at CGS and then, in Lyle’s own words, relates his life and military experiences in the Australian Army Medical Corps, British Army, and the Royal Flying Corps.
Lyle served as a fighter-pilot in the RFC during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and he was personally decorated for bravery by the King. His tragic accidental death in Scotland is re-told in the context of Great War Australian society, as it coped with the wider issues of deep grief and the fitting remembrance of lost loved ones.
His compelling story is finally told.
