This book was first published in 2010 in hardcover as Islands of Hell: the U.S. Marines in the western Pacific, 1944-1945. It’s important to be aware of this.

This book traces the US Marines grinding advance across the western Pacific during 1944-45. This brutal campaign was captured by US Navy photographers and much of their work was shown in this book for the first time. The final year of the Pacific war saw bitter fighting as the US forces hopped from island to island digging out a fiercely determined enemy. Many fatalities were recorded before the fighting came to an end in June 1945 on the island of Okinawa. This well presented photographic record is supplemented with detailed maps and well-researched text, written by noted military historian Eric Hammel.

This book is available from Booktopia too – not quite the same discount as The Americans on D-Day of my previous post, but all the same, at $20.95, that’s bargain buying. Link here if you are interested in acquiring it.
